About Gentle Waters Counseling

About Me

Hey There! My name is Samantha Hosea, but just call me Sam. I am a licensed Professional Counselor with  Masters Degree in Counseling. I’m an East Texas native that just couldn’t stand to leave Texas. I’ve been a counselor since 2016 and love getting to know my clients and the beautiful and complicated stories that make up their lives. The most important things to know about me include my humor, which you will get to see almost immediately as there will be plenty of laughter in my office. I’m the first born, so I tend to be a little bossy and pretty direct, which is normally a good thing. If it needs to be said in session, fear not, it will be said. I love to travel and spend as much time as possible seeing the world. Being in nature and especially near water, calms my soul. Which is why I named my practice Gentle Waters Counseling. I am always on the hunt to the next body of water to experience. I’m also down to earth and just a regular person. In my experience my clients don’t need an expert in the room, they need a human being that cares about them, their pain, their joy, and their world. And just for good measures I’m also an open book. I believe that if I expect my clients to be open and honest with me, I should expect the same from myself. If you have a question about me I can almost guarantee to answer, even if it’s nosy, those are the best kind. Counselors and clients form a relationship and in order to do so we have to know one another, which is a beautiful experience.

What to Expect

I want to begin by saying, your pain is a valid experience. Counseling is a place to be heard, feel supported, and learn some new ways to handle your everyday life concerns. These concerns may be your struggling marriage, difficulties parenting, the strain of being a teenager, adjustments in life, such as a loss or grief, difficulties at work, or your mood in general. Many times, we know what the problem is, but are not sure what to do about it. That’s OKAY! You are not supposed to automatically know what to do in every situation. Counseling can help you better understand your situation & teach you to cope more effectively.

Working with me includes a collaboration and you may come to know and understand yourself in a deeper way, and in turn help those in your life understand you better. One important aspect of counseling is the talking and processing stage. It’s incredibly helpful to talk through the concerns aloud, which often gives you a better perspective and understanding of the issue. I’m there to ask questions, guide, and provide alternative perspectives. We must allow space and time for us to fully experience, feel, and understand ourselves, a situation, or concern before we start problem solving.

Another part of counseling includes working together to give you some additional tools to be more successful in managing your relationships & your mood. I call this the “nuts and bolts” part of counseling. I often remind my clients that you only know what you know. We weren’t all taught the best or healthiest ways to experience or react to emotions, conflict, or life in general so we may struggle. Counseling is a place to learn and unlearn ways to cope.

This is your journey, one that I am invited into briefly. I would be honored to be a small part of your life.
